Your District 3 Supervisor

Although many of you know me as your District Supervisor, one of my greatest passions is spending time with my family and raising my son and daughters in the same mountains that raised me.

ADVENTURE

Hiking the John Muir Trail

This past summer, three generations of our family — my 13-year-old son Warren, my father Bob (who turned 69 during the trip), and myself — backpacked the 228-mile John Muir Trail. It wasn’t just a trail — it was a rite of passage for my son turning 13, something we had been looking forward to since he was eight years old.

The first day tested Warren immediately — steep climbs, high elevation, and a heavy pack. Around day 11, battling a cough at over 11,000 feet which kept him up all night and nursing a rolled ankle, he faced a choice every young man eventually faces: quit, or push through. He chose to push through.

Along the way he learned to fly fish, caught 186 fish, painted alpine lakes with watercolors, crossed towering passes, and watched the Sierra grow bigger and more dramatic with every mile south. By the time we stood together on the summit of Mount Whitney, something had shifted. The mountains have a way of shaping you.

For me, the trail is deeply personal. My dad introduced my brother Mel and I to the wilderness decades ago. We failed more than once before finally completing the John Muir Trail together years later. Those lessons — grit, resilience, finishing what you start — helped shape my life.
Now I had the privilege of watching those same lessons take root in my own son.

Backpacking mirrors life. Some days are incredible. Some days are miserable. The question is always the same: when it gets hard, do you quit — or do you keep going?

This trip marked a pivotal moment in Warren’s journey toward becoming a young man. And for me, it was a reminder that the most important title I will ever hold is not that of an elected official — its “dad”.
