On June 26, 2025, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum issued a secretarial order directing the National Park Service to strengthen coordination with “gateway” communities—towns and cities that border or support national parks—to ensure mutual benefits and sustainable management https://mcclintock.house.gov/
Why it matters:
Economic boost: These communities are vital to park tourism and local economies; closer collaboration can enhance infrastructure planning, visitor services, and economic development.
Shared stewardship: The initiative aims to foster joint work on conservation, emergency preparedness, transportation, and public health between parks and their neighboring towns.
Note: This order does not eliminate the current reservation system in place at Yosemite National Park. That system remains active unless separately modified by the National Park Service, however you can rest assure the plan proposed a few years ago by the gateway communities including Tuolumne county will be back on the table to discuss soon.

For those unable to attend the Sheriffs town hall tonight. Here is a recap of what he said:
- Community Safety and Enforcement Update
- The Sheriff’s Office is now fully staffed — the best staffing levels we’ve seen in years.
- Key units have been restored, including the Narcotics TNT Team, boosting our ability to tackle drug and property crimes head-on.
- In just the last two weeks, proactive patrols led to two burglary suspects caught in the act — a direct result of having deputies back on the streets.
- Combatting Fentanyl and Protecting Youth
- Thousands upon thousands of fentanyl pills have been removed from our community.
- We’re seeing real impact:
- Street prices for fentanyl are rising
- Overdose rates are dropping
- Narcan deployment is down
- Raw footage is being shared to send a clear message: we are taking back our streets and exposing what our kids are up against.
- The Sheriff is putting School Resource Officers (SROs) back in our schools — a major step toward prevention, early intervention, and building positive relationships between law enforcement and youth.
- We can say we’re there for our kids and the community — but without enough deputies, we’re not in the schools making those critical connections and now were able to do the job being fully staffed.
- The department is also working to remove children from drug-infested environments and connect families with support services.
- Protecting the Vulnerable
- Supervisor Kirk has proposed the creation of a specialized unit dedicated to tracking and apprehending sex offenders who prey on children and vulnerable populations.
- The Sheriff is fully behind the proposal, pending board budget approval for the necessary positions but is working on solutions to fund it without touching there’s general fund.
- This would be a major step forward in targeted enforcement and victim protection.
- Homelessness: Accountability with Compassion
- The Sheriff is a key member of the county’s Homeless Accountability Team.
- There is zero tolerance for illegal encampments — enforcement is consistent and firm.
- •At the same time, individuals are being directed to Camp justice and other service providers for help, recovery, and long-term solutions.

- This afternoon I attended a “biomass” meeting, but really it was about forest health, clean water, safe communities, and good old common sense. This evening, I joined the Jamestown town hall to stand with our Sheriff’s Department. For the first time, they’re fully funded — many lifelong staff have never seen that until now. While others talk about defunding police, here in Tuolumne County we’re committed to funding public safety and keeping our community safe.
